Chaparral Leaf Powder

Chaparral is a traditional Native American treatment for cramping pains, joint pains, and allergic problems.

Modern research has revealed that Chapparal’s nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) has potent anti-inflammatory activity, possibly due to its ability to block the actions of the enzyme lipoxygenase. This enzyme creates pro-inflammatory chemicals known as prostaglandins; by blocking this process chaparral may be helpful for inflammatory conditions. At high amounts, NDGA also inhibits cyclooxygenase, an enzyme similar to lipoxygenase. Chaparral also contains antioxidant flavonoids and has demonstrated anti-amoeba activity in test tubes.

Category: Medicinal

These herbs are so named because they are medicine and should be respected as such. God gave herbs to be used as medicine, so it is important to use wisdom in taking them. Each medicinal herb usually targets a specific gland, organ, or body system. They are stronger, which is why it is recommended to use lower dosages for short periods of time.

Suggested Use

With medicinal herbs, it is important to start slow and increase gradually. Begin with 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon in food, drinks, smoothies, or tea, and then evaluate to see how the body is doing. Increase in small increments of 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon if the body is responding well until the desired response is achieved. It is recommended that these types of herbs be used at low dosages for a short period of time. For management of stress, hormone balance, or nutrition, focus on the adaptogenic and nutritive herbs.

Precautions: Rare reports of serious liver disease have been associated with ingestion of chaparral. Seek advice from a health care practitioner before use and, in so doing, inform them if you have had, or may have had, liver disease, kidney disease, frequently use alcoholic beverages, or are using any medications. Discontinue use and see a doctor if vomiting, fever, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or jaundice (e.g. dark urine, pale stools, yellow discoloration of the eyes) should occur. Not to be used during pregnancy. As always, consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or consuming any pharmaceutical medications.
