How to Heal the Liver

The liver is your largest organ, weighing 3-4 pounds, and the most important workhorse in your entire body.  If you remove 2/3 of your liver, it will completely regenerate itself within three months if provided the proper care.  It is the only organ in the body that has that ability.  You cannot live without your liver.  The liver is known to do over 500 critical chemical functions in the human body.  A few functions include producing bile, metabolizing proteins, fats, sugar, vitamins and minerals and storing them for future use, detoxifying the blood, filtering everything that enters the body, including all pollutants, environmental chemicals and toxins, producing cholesterol, and metabolizing hormones.

  • Some signs of a damaged or weakened liver include the following:
  • Intolerance to greasy and/or spicy foods
  • Weight gain or unexplained weight loss
  • Frequent headache
  • Chronic constipation and indigestion
  • Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis
  • Sinus and allergy problems
  • Yellowing of eyes and skin
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Itching all over the body
  • Pain over liver (right side of abdomen, under lower rib cage)

Nutrition for the Liver

To heal the liver, eating right is critical.  Remember the liver filters literally everything that enters the body.  So the only way to heal the liver is to remove the incredible burden often put upon it.  For example, highfat diets, large amounts of meat and dairy, is very difficult for the liver to process, especially considering additional hormones and antibiotics that may be present in these foods.  All pollutants such as processed foods, pesticides and herbicides, cigarette smoke, alcohol, drugs (including pharmaceuticals), are all very hard on the liver.  The best way to do a liver cleanse is to focus on eating quality fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds with lots of water.  Water is critical for removing and flushing toxins from the body.  While doing a liver cleanse, eliminate or minimize meat, dairy, processed foods and sugar best you can for optimal success.

The Liver and Health Conditions

Hormone imbalances are often the result of the liver being too overworked to filter excess synthetic estrogens.  High cholesterol is often the result of the liver being too overworked to filter excess fats.  Anger, frustration, irritability, bitterness and “flying off the handle” are all tied to poor liver function as well.  Hepatitis simply means inflammation of the liver. It is not a disease, but something serious to be handled immediately.  Elevated liver enzymes means the liver is damaged and leaking enzymes into the bloodstream that are normally held and used within the liver for important functions.  A liver cleanse is ALWAYS important for maintaining quality long-term health!  The liver and gallbladder go hand in hand, so focus on both!

Liver Duct System

Bile drains from the ultra small bile ducts (ductiles) that service each of the liver's tens of thousands of lobules into progressively larger ducts, culminating in the common bile duct. The right and left hepatic ducts join just outside the liver to form the common hepatic duct.

Bile passing through the common bile duct exits and enters the gallbladder through the cystic duct. Most physicians refer to the gallbladder as a vestigial organ (as they do the appendix) -- meaning that it's lost most of its original function and now pretty much "gets in the way."  To them, this explains why the gallbladder does not usually empty completely, which allows gallstones to form -- leading to pain, infection, inflammation, and even cancer. This also explains why they remove upwards of half a million gallbladders a year in the United States alone.

They are wrong!

The gallbladder serves a definite function. It is not vestigial. It regulates the flow of bile so that it can "push out" into the digestive tract in bursts as needed to assist in the digestion of fats. In fact, the gallbladder will contract to squeeze out stored bile when stimulated by a fatty meal. Without the gallbladder, bile merely dribbles out in a constant flow, thus being present when not required and insufficiently present when needed. This can lead to a whole series of digestive problems including poor digestion, intestinal distress, diarrhea, and an inability to fully break down fats. In fact, many people, as they age, need to take an ox bile supplement (available at all health food stores) with their meals to compensate for insufficient bile in their digestive tracts. If you have digestive problems after eating fatty meals, it's one of the first things you (and your doctor) should look at. Incidentally, the issue here isn't one of good fats versus bad fats, but of how much fat. That's one of the reasons fast foods present such a problem -- their fat content is so high, particularly when you combine items such as burgers and fries.

It is important to understand that problems with the gallbladder rarely stem from the gallbladder itself. They stem from the liver, which if not functioning properly will manufacture bile that is prone to "stoning." Thus removing the gallbladder does not eliminate the problem; it merely eliminates ONE place problems can manifest. Where else can problems manifest? If you follow the biliary tree down past the gallbladder, you will find that the common bile duct joins the pancreatic duct before entering the duodenum through the ampulla of Vater. And there's the problem. Although stones and sludge formed in the liver can no longer get trapped in the gallbladder (if it's been removed), they can still quite easily get lodged in the pancreatic duct and ampulla of Vater. This causes the digestive juices secreted by the pancreas to back up into the pancreas itself and start inflaming and digesting pancreatic tissue. This is called pancreatitis.

In other words, by merely removing the gallbladder and not addressing the underlying problem of "bad bile" being formed in the liver, you may potentially merely be moving symptoms from the gallbladder to the pancreas. Fortunately, there are natural health alternatives. Dietary changes will often help. But the best way to optimize the health of your liver, gallbladder, and pancreas is to regularly cleanse and flush the liver and gallbladder.

Beneficial Foods

As stated above, it is important to eat quality foods during this cleanse.  Focus on fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, wild rice, quinoa, and good fats like coconut and avocado.  Also eat quality, organic or fresh from the farmer’s market produce to avoid chemicals that challenge the liver.  Avoid the best you can alcohol, cigarettes, fried, fatty foods, high meat consumption, processed foods, breads, sugar and dairy products.  For ease, follow my guidelines for 80/20 rules and food combining and see my list of high residue vs low residue foods.  Add TURMERIC to ALL your dishes and salads!  Amazing herb for the liver!  I also recommend eating asparagus and artichokes which are great for the liver as well.

Liver/Gallbladder Flushes

Coffee is one of the most powerful ways to cleanse the colon, and the quickest way to get to the liver is via the colon.  This will completely open up the liver, causing it to dump all of its poisons, and also stimulate the release of excess bile trapped in the intestinal tract.

Although this is not recommended for this particular cleanse, it is an important cleanse to do for long-term maintenance.  Please refer to my website, www.spiritofhealthkc.com under cleansing for the complete information on doing this cleanse.  Removing coagulated stones from the gallbladder, liver and bile ducts is CRITICAL.  If you don’t think so, or don’t feel any symptoms related to this, think of everyone you know who had their gallbladder removed.  The first symptom is often a painful gallbladder attack, a rush to the emergency room and surgery, so practice prevention.

Water and juicing.  Add lemon to all your water!  To flush the liver you need liquids.  The best vegetables for the liver are carrots, beets, cucumbers and celery.  Every day, drink 8-16oz of this juice drink.  Drink it first thing in the morning upon rising.  Also eat these vegetables on salads.  The recipe is:

-  4 Stalks of celery

- 1 Whole Cucumber

- 2 Whole Carrots

- ½ beet
