Cedar Bear® Lemon Balm Leaf

Lemon Balm is a gentle herb that soothes the body and settles the nervous system and even helps calm overactive thyroids. It is a member of the mint family that has a wonderful lemony smell and taste. It is also known by its Latin name, Melissa, which is Greek for honey bee. Bees loved this lemony mint plant so much that the ancient Greeks planted it around their temples to encourage their bees to stay nearby, and the plant itself became synonymous with the honeybee!

Lemon Balm is native to Southern Europe and has been used since ancient times to calm the body and heart. An old Arabian proverb states, “Balm makes the heart merry and joyful.” In early 9th century Europe, Emperor Charlemagne ordered every monastery had to grow Melissa in their medicinal/culinary gardens and it became part of everything from a cooking spice to an ingredient in wines and liquors. In the early 1500’s, the Swiss physician Paracelsus called it the “elixir of life,” and believed it would strengthen and lengthen life, and Shakespeare referred to Lemon Balm in several of his plays! Because Lemon Balm had become commonly used for everything from cooking, cleaning, and for health, Lemon Balm crossed the ocean to the New World, and was grown in Thomas Jefferson’s gardens.

The word balm, or balsam, means the oils from a plant that have a soothing, healing, comforting quality. Melissa is so soothing and beneficial that it became known as Balm, and Lemon Balm because of its lemony scent and flavor, which lifts moods and soothes the body and nerves.

Lemon Balm is an amazing herb in many ways. It has antioxidants that protect overall health and is both calming and mood lifting at the same time as it helps relax and restore the nervous system. It also has a tonifying effect on the heart and circulatory system, which benefits blood pressure.

Lemon Balm supports and stimulates digestion, reducing gas and spasms in the digestive system, and is especially good for children’s upset tummies. It also soothes tension headaches, helps with sleep, and supports memory and brain function.

Lemon Balm is an herb that is used to help calm an overactive thyroid. If your metabolism often seems to be set on hyperdrive, it’s possible your thyroid may be running a bit overactive. If you are overly sensitive to hot temperatures, sometimes get anxious for no obvious reason, and have trouble keeping weight on, you may want to look at your thyroid function and try Lemon Balm TincTract® or Cedar Bear’s herbal formula Thyro Calm, which has Lemon Balm and other herbs that help calm overzealous thyroids. (If you have low thyroid function and a slower metabolism, go easy with the amount of Lemon Balm you use.)
